Tasting Notes:

Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

Deep dark black/purple with red hues. Aromatic nose with plum, black fruits and lovely spice. Notes of Christmas cake, dark chocolate and violets. Uncompromising Shiraz that is both elegant and powerful at the same time. There is exceptional structure, that delivers blackberry, raspberry and hints of pepper, finishing with impeccably polished tannins which balance the natural fruit acid to ensure the longevity of this exceptional wine from another great Barossa vintage.

Bin 1838 Premium Reserve Shiraz 2017

Full of dark fruit aromas including blackberry and plum. Freshly cut fruit flavours of blood plum, blackcurrant and cherries. A complex wine from well integrated oak which provides a spicy kick whilst the tannin balance is impeccable ensuring a smooth full bodied wine.

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

Deep black to crimson red with purple highlights. A massive all encompassing nose when allowed to breathe, forest fruits, blackberries, kalamata olive, and black pepper which are supported by a dark core of espresso bean, leather saddle and dried raisons. The palate shows superb concentration offering up tremendous texture and combines great richness with notes of chocolate, white truffle, leather, blackcurrant, black olive and alcohol. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve. A wonderfully example of big and bold Barossa Shiraz which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 3 hours prior to consuming.

Normans Estate Est 1853 Vine Ancestry 2017 Shiraz

Well-balanced elegant nose with soft freshly cut plum, blackberry and blueberry notes showing its youthfulness at this stage. This is complimented with star anise spice giving depth to the highly aromatic bouquet. Full and vibrant with an initial surge of juicy fruit flavours of blackberry, plum and mulberry. The oak and tannins are smooth and subtle with the under lying taste whilst some spice and natural fruit acid give length and definition. An outstanding match with all full flavoured red meat dishes. I find it goes well with the over powering delicious flavour of barbequed spare ribs!

Technical:

Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

The Shiraz grapes were individually picked out in the vineyard for their exceptional quality and picked separately to the rest of the vineyard. The grapes are then picked and delivered to the winery and gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to an open fermenter. The juice is pumped over twice a day for seven days to extract, homogenize and regulate temperature before draining and being basket pressed. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 20 hours to retrieve more of the essence of the grape. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in new and seasoned French and American oak barrels prior to bottling.

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

The 2015 vintage proved to be another good Barossa vintage following on from the 2012, 2013 and 2014 years which although had challenges provided excellent varietal flavours. The dry grown, old vines that yielded this fruit managed to produce wonderful fruit despite small volumes. We hand picked the fruit from a single block with vines aged up to 90 years. The fruit was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. The wine remains in a stainless steel tank until primary fermentation is completed. It is then run directly into new and old American and French hogsheads where it spent the next 24 months. Once the oak and the wine had perfectly become one the wine is blended and bottled without the use of filtration or fining.

Normans Estate Est 1853 Vine Ancestry 2017 Shiraz

Sourced from multiple sites in South Australia from vines aged from 35 - 80 years of age. The wine was fermented in small stainless steel fermenters to retain concentrated fruit flavours. To complete the fermentation process and maturation the wine went into mostly old oak barrels with a small percentage of new oak for a period of 12 months. This enabled the use of the finely toasted oak barrels to slowly infiltrate the highly concentrated fruit flavour creating a well-balanced yet complex tannin structure.
