Bright purple with a vivid purple hue. Intense notes of blueberry and strawberry, with darker complexing hints of black cherry, plum and lifted dandelion florals. Subtle notes of black cherry provide layered depth and complexity. A red fruit thread creates an intensely
bright core. Soft framing powdery tannins, restrained nutty oak and hints of ginger add elegant savoury notes
and the promise of silky elegance as this wine ages.
Michael Shiraz is Wynns Coonawarra Estate's best-of-vintage Shiraz. The first Michael (then named Michael Hermitage) was a one-off make from the 1955 vintage, made after proprietor David Wynn noticed the outstanding quality of the wine from two particular barrels and ordered them to be bottled separately. This wine - named after Wynn's young son - is a legend of the Australian wine story with good examples of the 1955 Michael Hermitage still offering an outstanding wine experience. Revived with the superb 1990 vintage, the fruit used for this wine comes from the best vineyard sites in Coonawarra and is made only in years when the grapes are of extraordinarily high quality.
96 Points - James Halliday Wine Companion
"This is a rare full-bodied wine with finesse. The coupling comes about courtesy of the way the oak is integrated and the tannins honed, though not by any apology from the blackberry and black cherry fruit."
95 Points International Wine Challenge 2018
"Classic fresh nose with black tea leaf aromas. Flavours of blueberries and a touch of crayon box, chewy spicy herbs underneath. Elegant integration of tannins, long textured finish."
94 Points Huon Hooke
"Good depth of red with a purple tint; the bouquet discreet, reserved and plum, vanilla, chocolate scented. Blackberry jam notes, the palate soft and the tannins smooth; oak is very sensitively handled. The wine seems less full-bodied than usual. Nice balance, but it arguably lacks a bit of detail at this stage. Cellar it for best results."
94 Points Andrew Caillard MW
"Deep crimson. Intense paneforte-like aromas including graphite, dark berry, liquorice, mocha, vanilla notes. Densely packed and voluminous wine with concentrated dark berry fruit, rich chocolaty textures, plenty of sweet mocha, vanilla oak and underlying herb garden notes. Finishes chocolaty with a long inky graphite plume and marked acidity. A forceful but well-balanced wine with immense concentration, power, richness and extract. Will take a few years to unfold."
