Tasting Notes:

Black core, garnet edges in colour.  Certainly less confected (literally) and meatier than the nose might suggest – flavours akin to Greek lamb and rosemary, bone marrow/steak tartare, carpaccio of assorted meats. Yet fruits and berries are evident, manifested primarily via an impression of a juniper/strawberry/cranberry reduction. And cola. Sleek tannins and the interface of judicious oak facilitate a plush and glossy Bin 150 disposition, avec sheen. “Rumour has it that the scope of the Bin 150 ‘proposition’ may soon evolve… Watch this space. Exciting times ahead.

Until then, revel in this Marananga 2017 Shiraz package – colourfully wrapped in French & American oak, a tannic seal tightening its mid-palate, and a colourful bow of sprightly spice & sumptuous fruits..”  - Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Technical:

Autumn and winter rainfall were above average in Marananga, creating an excellent start to the season. Relatively warm temperatures in August accelerated vines out of dormancy early with prevailing warmer than average conditions leading to early flowering. Spring was generally warmer and drier than average, with summer-like conditions.

The low soil moisture slowed vine growth, positively leaving vines with open canopies. January temperatures were lower than usual with the recorded maximum temperatures being the coolest in 22 years. Significant rainfall in early January provided a much needed moisture boost to the vines in the final stages of ripening. Without any extremes or stress, the vines continued to ripen evenly leading into an early harvest. In February, hotter weather prevailed ensuring a fast and early grape intake.

Accolades & Awards:

99 Points - Andrew Caillard MW 2017

“Deep colour. Lovely dark chocolate, blackberry, mulberry aromas with light cinnamon, vanilla, roasted chestnut notes. Generous, saturated and inky with lovely deep-set blackberry, mulberry fruits, cinnamon ginger oak complexity, fine loose knit ripe lacy textures, some meaty notes and integrated long acidity. Finishes grainy firm with plenty of blackberry ginger liquorice notes. A classical Barossa Shiraz with superb density, fruit definition and balanced oak. A reference vintage. Superb unforced wine showing all the hallmarks of the Penfolds house style and regional definition. My top pick of the 2019 collection. “

95 Points - Huon Hooke

"Very deep, dense, brooding red/purple colour, with a smoky char-oak and black fruit bouquet incorporating blackstrap licorice and sooty/earthy and blackberry notes. Cocoa powder and coal dust. The wine is very full-bodied but not as big a Bin 150 as usual. A more elegant style except that the tannins are quite chewy and robust, and the length is quite persistent."

95 Points - Angus Hughson

94 Points - James Suckling

"Blackberry, black-cherry, tar and earthy aromas sway towards savory for now; the oak is securely embedded. The palate has a super rich, super luscious and typically long, powerful feel, which is the hallmark of this terroir. Even though the vintage played out in unexpected conditions, the end result is terrific."

93 Points - Robert Parker

"Showing a bit of a caramelized, roasted-fruit edge to its aromas, the 2017 Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz follows that up with mouthwatering dark-fruit flavors of plums and blackberries, vanilla-oak notes and hints of roasted meat and espresso on the finish. It's full-bodied, plush and rich, aged in a mix of French and American oak, sure to be a crowd-pleaser."
