Tasting Notes:

Lifted floral spice of early-picked blackberry. The nose indicates the textural layering present on the palate. Restrained power and opulence present from the rich fruit of blackberry and cherry married to the subtle hints of cocoa and cinnamon. The textured layering of fine-grained tannins from carefully selected French oak, are wonderfully suited to the vibrancy of this wine, which finishes with a lingering velvet softness.

Technical:

To qualify for Old Block, vineyards must be planted on their own rootstock and be older than 40 years old. The youngest vineyard used in the 2014 Old Block Shiraz was planted in 1963 ; whilst the oldest planting was 1870. Once the vineyard has qualified to be considered Old Block; it is graded in a blind tasting by the winemaking team to determine if it meets the quality standard. The parcels from Eden and Barossa Valley are then carefully blended by Senior Winemaker Toby Barlow to create a balanced and age worthy wine.Lifted floral spice of early-picked blackberry. Accolades & Awards:

98 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

The average age of the vines is 88 years, and are both Barossa Valley and Eden Valley; standard static fermentation approach with pumpovers, but varied for each parcel, matured in a mix of new and used French oak. The colour is perfect, the medium-bodied palate exquisitely balanced and proportioned, red and black fruits both on parade; it has an almost airy grace to the way it moves along the palate to a lingering finish

96 Points Patrick Eckel

St Hallett have wines for every level, the Blackwell is a perennial favourite when it comes to consistent quality and value for money. The Old Block which is sourced from vineyards that range from ~73 - 106 years old is a step up again. The wine has a lifted nose of spiced plum and vanilla oak, the palate has tremendous balance and poise, it will age almost indefinitely. There is a slight leathery aspect to the beautifully structured red berry fruits, tannins are plush, but supporting. Tremendous length to finish balancing all of the wines inputs.

95 Points The Wine Front

Old vines. Sourced from both the Barossa (73%) and Eden valleys. All French oak. First made in 1980.
